El Presidente
I came across the below article on Cany cigars/cigarettes. Straw poll, think back. In your early childhood years. Q. Growing up, did you ever consume candied cigars or candied cigarettes? https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/candy-tobacco-imitation-products-availability-and-marketing-linked-to-children/ar-BB1ox80Y?item=flightsprg-tipsubsc-v1a?season=2024/ Childhood use of candy cigarettes, which are fake cigarettes made out of sugar, is associated with cigarette use among users, and yet there has been no research into the availability of these products or how they are currently being marketed. In a recent study led by UNC undergraduate student Dov Bearman with co-authors and mentors from the UNC Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program (TPEP), researchers set out to fill this gap by performing a content analysis of all candy tobacco imitation products available for online purchase in the United States. Using Google and retail websites, the researchers identified 66 unique candy tobacco imitation products available for purchase. The most popular of these products, by far, were candy cigars, which made up 59% of all identified candy tobacco imitation products.
Popular Post ha_banos
I recall white solid chalky sweet sticks with a red tip. We'd walk around with them hanging out of mouths and pretending ofc. Then crunch them and eat them. They had no filter. Cannot find any pics online. Can't recall any packaging or brand names... Will try to find in ye olde sweete shoppe! I was never a cigarette smoker... Got into cigars around 30yo.

They were right next to the candy lipstick, if I grew up wearing lipstick and smoking cigarettes I'd be more convinced of a correlation. 2 1

If you puffed out, white smoke (cornstarch I think) came out. They looked just like filter cigarettes except for the pink center. Gum was always hard as a rock. I’ve taken one drag on a cigarette once in my life and would never do it again. Weed was much more enjoyable.

I thought I was so cool 😆 😂 😆
Dozerhead
I remember candied cigarettes and bubblegum cigars back in the 70's. I don't remember the brand name, though.
Namisgr11
I wouldn't exactly call them a gateway to the tobacco variety.
Puros Y Vino
Big fan of Popeye's cigarettes and those black licorice cigars and pipes. Ironically I'd buy those while grabbing a pack of Rothmans for my father. Back in the 70's the stores didn't car about age.

I used to buy smokes for my dad all the way up until it looked as if they might be for me (say 98/99 or something like this).
Lt4-396
The white pure sugar cigarettes and the gum that blew out smoke were consumed almost daily in the summer as a kid. It didn't help the ice cream truck driver lived a few houses down and left his truck open 24/7. You would go in and take whatever you wanted and toss the correct amount of change in the jar.

Those look odd. The missus says she's seen them at old sweet shops.
JohnS
I certainly remember the brand I consumed as a kid, here in Australia... Obviously, that name was updated to this one below... Good memories!
Popular Post Boss Hog
God knows I went through several packs of these growing up. Were often referred to as “Popeye Cigarettes”.

I recall being given chocolate cigarettes and cigars when I was a kid. Often by aunties or uncles visiting from overseas. My parents rarely gave my brother and I chocolate as treats (besides Easter), so I never really developed a taste for it.

I recorded this in my journal and thought, "nobody else is going to know what I'm talking about if I make this reference." Glad to hear that others remember these as well!
GerardMichaelTX
We smoked a lot of candy cigarettes. I loved the bubble gum ones because they were wrapped in paper and if you blew into them the confectioners sugar they were rolled in would puff out like a real smoke. But nothing beat grandpa shoving a real sweet tipped cigar into my mouth when he saw me "pretending" to smoke.

Good memories! Yeah we loved these. My brothers and I would pretend we were the coolest smokers on the block with these after watching a John Wayne or some WW 2 flick. About the only thing tobacco related in the lolly field I can remember as a kid. Can still remember Winfield advertising being blazoned everywhere, especially at Origin time.
